Her specialist areas of expertise include medical and clinical negligence, compensation for abuse and neglect including sexual abuse, personal injury, family work, risk assessments and capacity assessments.
Clinical Negligence
Dr de Taranto has carried out many dozens of assessments in cases of clinical and professional negligence cases over the past ten years, including complex clinical and multi-track high-value negligence cases. These are mainly cases where there is a claim for psychiatric injury as the result of negligent treatment of a physical health condition, but also some cases where there has been negligent treatment by mental health services.
Family Court
Dr de Taranto has carried out hundreds of assessments in the past twenty years for the Family Courts, involving risk assessments of parents, especially where the parents have a history of violent or sexual offending, substance misuse or psychiatric illness. She now does about fifteen such assessments a year, and is called to give evidence in court in about five cases a year. She has taken part in giving evidence by “hot-tubbing” (concurrent evidence) and regularly attends updated Child Protection training up to Level 3 as well as Safeguarding Adults training as part of her NHS role.
Compensation Cases
Dr de Taranto has carried out several hundred assessments over the past fourteen years in cases of claims related to compensation for physical, emotional and sexual abuse, or neglect, with the legal actions being against both individuals and organisations including the Scout Association, various churches, schools, Local Authorities, the fire brigade and the military. She does about forty such assessments per year at present and has given oral evidence in court on a number of these cases.
